Z87 Overclocking - RAM Speed

Hello friends.

I was curious to know if on the Z87 platform, seeing as mainly the multiplier is used to overclock, does that mean that you can overclock the CPU without changing the RAM speeds at all?

I was just wondering because I wanted to know the benefits of higher speed ram as far as overclocking potential is concerned. I currently own an i7 930 and to overclock that all you could do was raise the BCLK, which mean the RAM speed would increase as well, and if you were using low speed RAM you would want to decrease the RAM multiplier in order to make sure that the system was stable.

Now I intended to run some 1600 MHz RAM if I wanted Z87, but was told to get some 1866 MHz for better overclocking potential - which I wasn't too sure about.

Eac OCs and runs independent of each other, Haswell CPUs scale to DRAM better than previous gens of CPUs so would look to 1866/8-9 or 2133/9 as a starter if going with a K CPU - the 4670K CPUs can generally run 2400-2666 fairly easily while the 4770Ks can shout up to to 2800-3000 DRAM - I've got 32GB of 2666 with my 4770K (4.6)/Hero combo. ^I'm not a fan of Ian's methodology with that one.
It runs RAM (Haswell) as high as the RAM will run..stably.
Like Tradesman said:Start @ 2133 and look up.
Other kits are good, too...like the 4GB Ballistic Tactical. They'll overclock pretty good.
G.Skill CAS 9-10 2400-2600+ are good sticks, too.

I see. Thanks for that information. I was just worried that if I did decide to go with some 1600 MHz RAM, I would not be able to overclock the CPU further. Looking at those results and your post though, I guess I'll go have a look at some 1866 MHz+ RAM, with the lowest latencies I can find at 1.5 V for that extra performance boost.

Thanks for your input as well schmuckley.

That "1.5 RAM" thing is bogus.Overvolting your RAM does not do any damage to a chip whatsoever.
I'm on a 3570K running 1.78v at the moment..and that's taking it easy.
