My current SBG6580 keeps dropping (Comcast), won't reconnect for hours. Log says it's getting Access Denied when it's down. I want to get a modem and router separate. If I get a SB6121, am I asking for still having the same issue? Do I need to get a different brand?

If Comcast has checked your line and it is not the issue, I would get the SB6141 that I used for three months this summer on Comcast -- it is on their acceptable list HERE and would go with a nice ASUS router, like the RT-N56U or RT-N66U or RT-N66W if you want N and not AC. Several are on very good sales currently.

I've had to replace a number of SB6121 modems within a year due to heat issues that the SB6141 seems not to have.

You may want to ask comcast and see if they also see your device being denied. They should be able to tell you why they are not allowing your device on the network. There may some issue with the modem and hopefully they can tell you why it is doing this.

I am going to suspect the modem part of your current device is the same as the new one you are looking at. I suspect you can convert your current one into a similar device by setting it to bridge mode.

If you buy another brand make sure it is supported by comcast...there are a small number that are not. Still the motorola brands are the most popular and most people have few issues with them. All equipment can fail so you could just have a bad device...still I suspect it is something else most failures they either completely die or get lots and lots of errors making them unusable.
