Whenever I plug anything into my laptop's usb ports, and audio jacks any sound coming from my laptop ultimately vanishes. But when I unplug everthing and restart my laptop the sound comes back. When I do plug anything into it, the sound is gone and even though I unplug my mouse and headphones, the sound is still gone. My volume control says there is sound coming out. My drivers are up to date, and nothing is wrong with them. Is it because of faulty ports? I have not had this problem before and only started when I plugged in my mouse as I do every day. This is annoying me because I do play games on my laptop and with the sacrifice of sound for my peripherals, it does get irritating. Please help. Also I am using an Alienware M17r1 and I am running windows vista.

Have a look in Control Panel > Speakers/Audio section to see what device Windows thinks its sending the audio output to. Do this at the three different stages (sound working; usb/jack plugged in so sound not working; usb/jack removed but sound still not working). If Windows seems to think its changing the device when you plug stuff in or out then that will give you some indication of which speakers/output method you need to investigate.

Other solution: get rid of Vista. I love Windows products but Vista was still the worst invention since the marzipan dildo.

Ive tried almost everthing, but sadly to no avail. The audio is normal when i restart my computer, but everything goes whack when i plug in something. And all the sound is going to my laptops realtek speakers(im no expert at computers and this may just be an easy fix i cant figure out). When i press the test button on the speakers, it shows it is playing sound and that there is nothing wrong with it. My laptop has 2 usb side ports, a headphone and a microphone port. All of which seem to trigger this problem. The usbs work as the light on my headphones go on when it is plugged in. There is no way to test if my headphone and microphone ports work because there is no sound coming through them. And also my mouse works too. I do not think i can send my computer back to the manufacturer because I bought this laptop from an online seller. Ive had this laptop for about 2 months now and this problem only arose now. Any other suggestions?

Only the normal suggestions that you probably don't want to hear I'm afraid: try to send it back. Online or not, a retailer should accept faulty returns, unless you mean that your brought it from an individual via the internet. Failing that get on to the manufacturer support site, in your case Alienware.

I would also suggest that any retailer who sold you a system with Windows Vista in the last two months is probably not somebody to use again.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
