If you are just going to use the computer for gaming (and basic computer tasks e.g. web browsing, streaming), then an i5 is more than enough. You should try to invest more money into your GPU, as most games are more GPU dependent than CPU (there ARE cpu dependent games, but I don't know which as I don't play them :p)

If you are pretty tight on budget, I suggest getting an dual core i3-4xxx and spending the rest on the GPU. But, if you want something that is more "future-proof" then go for the i5.

I would suggest looking into the AMD FX series too, if you are on a budget. Good luck :)
Games can't tell the difference between a i5 and i7 unless you use multiple GPUs. The i7 is better when you have 3 GPUs. Otherwise you are better off 99/100 with a i5.

By next summer there will be a new yearly CPU refresh by Intel. More of the same, little bit faster but nothing that you should wait for.

Games optimised for 8 threads can tell the difference between an i5 and an i7 weather the motherboard is connected to onboard graphics or a quintet of gtx780's. And I thought 'tick tock' worked out slightly more often than once a year?

AMD is not lame, is just a bit less fast, but is more cheap and the motherboards are usually more cheap. Not to mention that AMD doesn't update its socket each year forcing the users to buy new expensive hardware if they want to stay in line.
