I was actually streaming at the time so I have a video of it. Read the video description for more details.

So I've had this problem once or twice before and restarting my computer seemed to fix it. I got it again today and it keeps happening after a few minutes of game play. Basically, the game will be running fine (my graphics card is pretty old so its running on pretty low settings) and then all of sudden the game will freeze for a second and then recover but the frame rate will have plummeted into the single digits and the texture quality will be absolutely horrible. Not even the lowest settings the game can possibly be set to will look this bad. Is this my graphics card crashing? or is it something else that's causing the problem? I'm getting a new card very soon so its no big deal if the card is the problem but I just want to make sure that the card is actually the problem here and not something else.

Solution

I went to the service center today and they told me that they've replaced my GT240 with GTS 250 :D :D :D :bounce:
that means my GPU was faulty.
just to be sure,
Remove your GPU and try those games...

I think this same thing happened with me.
I have an GT 240 and after playing some games like COD:MW 1/2/3, LEGO Marvels Superheroes , COD 2 for half an hour my screen goes black for 3-4 secs and againg starts. sometimes screen goes black and when it start the colour of the was changed. like a negative colour all over my screen.
I think it is a GPU problem so i gave it to replace.
I'll get it soon in 3-4 days and i'll check whether it was a problem of GPU or some other component.

just to be sure,
Remove your GPU and try those games on your onboard graphics, if you dont get any problems with your onboard graphics then it is sure that your dedicated GPU is about to dead.
