Why the dark zones of my games are so dark that I almost can't see anything?

I play some 3D games (Counter-Strike 1.6, Call of Duty: Ghosts, etc) with my low-end desktop computer (NVIDIA GeForce GT 620) connected with an adaptor that converts DVI to VGA to an old flat monitor (Not CRT).

The brightness of my monitor, of the games I play and of the NVIDIA Control Panel are set to default so I don't think that that's the problem.

The drivers of the video card and monitor are up to date.

Maybe it's because my flat monitor is old and it's connected with an adaptor via VGA?

I haven't got budget to buy a new monitor not even for repairing it.

Solution
In your Nvidia drivers settings click on Video/Adjust Video Color settings, Select Gamma and increase the gamma of all three colours to 1.4. Try your game again. Enjoy.

your monitor is probably just old.. They haven't even made CRT's in who knows how long, so it has to be fairly old. Most of my CRT's that I still have around have the same problem. It's just aging on them and parts wearing out. Not sure where you live, but used pc places and liquidators around me sell cheap 19" 4:3 flat screens for like $30. People give away CRT's on Craiglist and Kijiji all the time.

It's most likely your monitor, if shadows really are a problem for you there's monitors out there with lightboost technology that make shadows look less dark and visible.

It's your old monitor. I have a friend who used to have an old LCD monitor and the colors looked really washed compared to what I see on my IPS. It caused his images to lose detail especially when rendering dark scenes. I gave him a spare LCD that wasn't as old and to him it was like an upgrade.
