Hey guys, I am having a serious problem. Well, serious for some games, not a problem for others. Anyways, for starters, here's a quick summary of my current laptop from running 'dxdiag':

HP Pavillion dv6 Notebook with Win 7 Prof 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) SP 1
Default BIOS
Intel Core i5 CPU M 450 @ 2.4 GHz (4 CPUs ~ 2.4 GHz)
6144 MB Memory / 5942 MB Available RAM Available OS
Page File: 2709 MB used, 9712 MB available
DirectX 11 (No DX Setup Parameters found)
Using System DPI / System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 Percent)
DWM DPI Scaling: Disabled

DxDiag Notes: No problems found for Display Tab, Sound Tab 1 and 2, or Input Tab

Display:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
DAC Type: Internal DAC (400MHz)
Display Memory: 3727 MB
Dedicated Memory: 1012 MB
Shared Memory: 2714 MB
Current Mode: 1366 x 768 (32 Bit) (60 Hz)

If additional info is needed, just let me know....

Anyways, here's the problem when I play games like Skyrim, Empire Total War and Firefall.

Picture this same type of distortion completely filling my screen when just loading Firefall. I can't even select a game or anything because this effect is immediate. With Empire Total War once an actual game starts, after watching the mission intro, that weird graphic effect takes over the screen and I cant see or do anything. At least with Skyrim it is hit or miss. So far, just starting a new game, I only see this in the open. In the first area with the dragon and the caves and houses, there are no issues. I also randomly see this same effect in The Sims 3. I have no idea what is going on.

Other games like Minecraft, Civ 5 and No More Room in Hell all play with no issues at all.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Be happy to provide whatever additional info you might need to assist. As far as I know, my drivers are updated and I should be able to handle these games without issue.

The possibilities here are

1. An overheating laptop. You may need to open the laptop clean the motherboard, CPU, GPU and add a fresh coat of thermal paste to the GPU and CPU.
2. You may have done too much overclocking to the GPU that results in displaying artificats.
3. The graphics card may have failed and needs to replaced.

I don't believe it's a heat issue. I went ahead and took apart my laptop and cleaned the fan and everything internal. The fan was a little dirty but nothing bad. Then, using GPU-Z, I ran Skyrim and the temperature went from 46 running idle, up to 68 at max while playing. I have not done any overclocking to anything on my laptop. I guess it is possible my card has failed, but I would assume if I can play other 3D games like Civ C, No More Room in Hell and Minecraft all without issue, that its not the card. I have no idea though, so maybe it is the card.... Thanks for any additional help.

You should also try updating the GPU drivers to the latest one to rule out driver compatibility issues.........
