my present ram is 4gb single stick and i want to upgrade it.So was thinking to upgrade by adding 8gb and making it a total of 12 gigs is that possible ? And if yes any side effects of bottleneck or other stuffs ?
Thanks in advance.

it might be but it will be single channel, your best bet will be to buy another 4 gb stick exactly like your current one, and run them in dual channel. Unless you do lots of virtual machines or video rendering running dual channel 8gb will be faster than single channel 12gb.
It is possible. There is a somewhat increased risk of incompatibility, and you'd need to confirm with your motherboard manual how it treats that configuration with regard to dual channel/flex mode.

I would perhaps suggest you try adding just a second 4GB stick. That ought to be enough for now. And to maximise your chances when it comes to compatibility, try and aim for memory running at the same voltage, and ideally at the same clocks and timings too.

This is true as long as he goes with a 2x4gb kit, but I kinda took it as he was going to buy another 8gb stick, then there will be no dual channel. I also hated to speculate as we dont' know his board.

No, it goes for an 8GB stick too.
