I have an Acer Aspire 9300 laptop with an NVidia GeForce Go 6100 chipset / graphics chip. I am running Windows 7 x64 with 3gb RAM and an AMD Turion 64 cpu. Everything has been running smoothly for some time until I got an update for the graphics driver. It failed to load and on several subsequent occasions. I tried getting the driver from Acer - only 32bit Vista supplied - and from NVidia but always the same answer. Failed to unknown problem and the error code 800705B4. Windows hardware troubleshooter failed to find the problem as did the update troubleshooter and the Fixit program from Microsoft. If anyone has managed to overcome this problem without a complete reinstall, I would be very pleased to hear how they did it because it is driving me crazy trying to get rid of the Windows standard VGA driver which has lowered the laptop display resolution. Many thanks in advance. Ronja
Would you believe it but I managed to resolve this myself. If anyone else has this or a similar problem, this may be your answer too.
With the display adapter showing VGA standard driver, I restarted in safe mode, went back to system and updated the driver. Hey presto, when I restarted again the NVidia chip was back online.
Thanks for the other answer but for some reason there was no restore point to go back to.
Bye for now, Ron.

Try doing a restore to a prior date before you ran the updates.
The nVidia drivers don't work because for laptops the video card is supported by the drivers from the laptop vendor. The reference drivers from the actual video chip manufacturer are not supported. They may work at times, but are not supported.
