I have a customer who wants their files removed from their HD. Their computer will not turn on. I told them I could simply remove the HD and dock it then remove her files. She then proceeds to tell me that her computer might have viruses. Which leads me to believe that windows might not boot. If I dock her internal HD and connect it to my pc as an external HD via usb with a corrupted windows, can I still access her files? Will the HD plug and play like normal externals do? Or will a corrupted windows prevent that?

If the drive is mechanically and electrically intact you can attach it to another machine either directly or through a dock and should be able to access it, just a corrupt Windows install will not prevent that. But I would probably try booting her machine with a bootable optical disk first. If she brought up viruses, download and create a bootable CD of the free Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 from HERE and run that first to clear viruses. Then you can either attach it to another machine or boot it from an installer disk to copy the files.

If Kaspersky runs on the disk, I would think about doing a repair installation after copying the old files off. HERE is a good guide for Windows 7.
