Hi guys, I've recently had a new hard drive put in my HP Pavilion 7840 and have tried to format and install Windows ME using the recovery disks. However, when I finish the installation and boot the PC, the message comes up: "Operating System not found". I'm really struggling with this. I would really like to get this PC going so any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks,
Joel

This is often the result of the HDD not being set as the active partition/drive. Go to this link and follow the directions to "fixmbr":

If this doesn't solve your issue, come back for more help. Good luck!

Hi, sorry for the late reply, been busy with school and stuff. The inly problem with that is I don't have a floppy disk and have no idea where to obtain one. Is there any other way I can fix the boot record?

Cheers, Joel

If you don't have a floppy drive available (or can borrow a USB floppy drive), you can look for an ME image to write to USB or DVD. In fact, you can so (as linked earlier) with nearly any bootable DOS device.

I would suggest you might want to dump ME altogether. It was a poor OS at its best and is grossly out of date today. You could install Linux on the same machine and likely get much more use out of it. ME is not going to run many modern applications.

Thanks for the answer, COLGeek. I much appreciate your help. Although I'm not a big fan of Linux, I might try it out on this machine because it will probably run a lot smoother than an install of Windows XP, Vista or 7.

Cheers, Joel
