I have an Acer Aspire | M with Windows 8 64-bit, an i5 core and 8GB DDR3 Memory. Until yesterday, it was working fine, but now it keeps telling me to close programs because it doesn't have enough memory. The memory in the task manager says 6.8/7.7 in the top left, but below it says 2.3GB is in use with 842MB available. I tried rebooting, but that didn't do anything. Why isn't it using all of my RAM?

Solution
Try going into msconfig and enabling Max Memory. Open msconfig and go to boot options then select advanced so you can put a check mark in Max Memory. You may have to reboot but that may solve your problem.

You might want to reseat your DIMMs. it could be that one has come loose, dust got between the contacts and is keeping it from using one DIMM, or even a bad DIMM.

power down
unplug the system (never remove or install memory with power to the system. the standby system keeps power to the memory even when the system is powered off.)
take out each memory module and blow compressed air from a can on the contacts then reinsert
power the system back up and check the memory amount

If none of this fixes the problem, you probably have a bad stick of memory. boot up the system with one module at a time inserted. the bad one won't allow the system to boot properly.
