Multiple Hard Drive question? Can I install programs on secondary hard drive?

Hi there, I have an intermediate knowledge at computers and I was curious about a particular matter concerning having multiple hard drives and if they are able to perform this particular operation that I want it to.

I have a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD on my gaming computer at the moment. However with a few large games file installed I am down to 120GB.

I was wondering if I get a 1TB Hard drive to put into my computer, could I also use that hard drive to install programs on it? I haven't done this before and I am not too sure how it works.

Is my current understanding of multiple hard drives correct? (Below)

- With more hard drives being added, that is not the primary hard drive (My SSD), I cannot install any application to it. I can only save Photos, Files, Videos, Music, etc to it? So it is not possible for me to install any sort of application such as Microsoft Office.

I know that if it were however possible I cannot expect the same gains from opening my applications on a traditional hard drive as if it was my SSD.

I just wanted to know if it was possible to install programs and run it just like how I run programs on my SSD to a traditional 1TB Hard drive.

If it's not possible I will have to get another 256GB Samsung Pro and configure a RAID0.

You know how when you install something it asks you where to install it? All you do is pick the location on the other drive. Steam even natively lets you install to multiple drives (I have Steam games on all 3 of my drives).

Ah... so will windows automatically know which Hard drive to locate the program when I open up the program via >Start > All Programs > (W/E File I installed)?

I do this all the time.

1)a) You can install anything you want, anywhere you want as long as you have the space.
b) I have some of my steam games installed on my secondary 2TB HDD - because my crucial 128GB ssd is a bit smallish.

2) Adding an extra HDD should be fairly simple - and yes you won't have the "loading" gains you would have on the SSD - but it should/will be very fast anyways.


I would recommend a WD Black HDD - do not get any "Green" drives, they use only slightly less power than "regular" HDD's yet they are much slower/park (the reading heads) more often.

Yes windows will know where to load the program up. It knows because it asks you like what the other poster said of where you want to install it.

Those icons - actually all icons you see on your desktop - those are obviously saved somewhere/installed so yes.
