hello all,

I am planning on buying a new cpu. I want to buy either the the i5 or i7 mentioned in the title. Basically, i want to know if the .i7 would be a better investment for about 50 dollars more compared to the i5. Also, if i overclock the i5 would its performance be on the same level as the locked i7? Thus, allowing me to save 50 dollars for the same performance.

thanks

The overclock depending on the overclock would probably be better then the i7 for gaming. Overall you might get 10 fps difference at most but probably nothing noticable if you have a decent gpu

I will be using the computer for mostly first person shooters. i have a 7950 gpu and an i3 3225 at the moment. I know that either processor will be better than my i3. I just don't want to regret my decision in the future.

I am proud to join such an active community. fyi, i ended up buying the 3570k from microcenter and was very fortunate to finally find the asus itx p87zz motherboard for a great price. again, thank you all.

I think that getting an i5 would be better even if you did not overclock. If you are just going to be gaming the i5 would be fine. Gaming will not utilize the hyperthreading on the i7, so they would give the same performance in a game. With the extra $100.00 that you would save you could get a better graphics card.
