Long story short, I bought this board many years ago and haven't kept up on the interoperability of pc components. Per the GB website, the P35 chipset supports both DDR2 and DDR3. Do I understand this correctly in that even though the chipset supports DDR3, you cannot install it on this particular board?

I'm wondering if it is worth upgrading my 2 x 2GB DDR2 right now to 4 x 2GB DDR2? Or if possible, is it even worth it to upgrade to DDR3? I want to get back into some level of pc gaming and have a machine that is capable to some degree. The other option is to buy a new board/cpu/memory. This system currently has an e8400 cpu and i've recently upgraded to the radeon hd 7850.

I think this will be a quick answer that someone can help with and i'm sorry for asking such a newb question...:)

Solution
The chipset support both, but the motherboard only support DDR2

budget? 7850 still good for mostly med settings. cpu might be a little weak.

Thanks rgd. There isn't really a budget I'm trying to stick to. I was hoping there are/were incremental changes I could make to improve performance as I haven't upgraded the hardware at all (aside from buying new GPU) since 2008/2009. I don't game hardcore, but I do enjoy being able to play without stuttering frames and/or constant loading screens. Lately I've been playing D3, SC2, DeusEx, RIFT and have noticed stuttering with DeusEx and poor fps with RIFT. I believe your statement about cpu is the most likely item i could upgrade (or overclock) to get some performance improvement at this point as it seems to have high usage when gaming (whereas the gpu usage remains low).
