Yes, but expect both cards to run with their settings tuned to match by the drivers, so you may find that it runs at the equivalency of two 7950's in CrossFire.

You should ensure your power supply has ample current capacity on the 12 volt rail.

I was also told that I'm better off getting a R9 280X and crossfiring it with my HD7950, is that also true?

my rig now is
CPU: i7 990X Extreme 3.46GHz
MEM: 24GB Corsair Vengeance
MB: G1.Guerrilla LGA1366
VC: XFX Double D Black Edition HD7950
PSU: CoolerMaster Silent pro 1000W
OS Win7 64-bit

Well, since an R9 280x is more or less a rebranded HD 7970 with slightly tuned GPU and Memory settings, any difference will be mostly moot. The biggest advantage I would expect is a lower cost for the R9 280x over the HD 7970, unless you're looking at a non-GHz edition HD 7970.

Cool, thanks for the help, I'll go with the R9 280x instead of 7970

Sounds good. :-) Also, you may wish to make the R9 280x your primary card for cases where CrossFire can't be used. Better to have the higher performance card as your fall back when running a single card configuration.
