I'm putting this together:
Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz
Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H
Seasonic x850 gold
G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866
2 x 8800GTS (sli)

My old system has a zalman cnps 7500. Is the Evo 212 a better bet? The case has a fan and a duct to the side of the case from the CPU. Is it worth putting another fan on the Evo 212? Is the side-duct fan usefule? There are two other case fans (120mm) - in from the front and out from the back. Is this the best setup? Not O/Cd at present but may well in the future.

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is your best bet. First try with the stock fan on EVO, its sufficient for normal use. When time comes to OC then you could think of another one.

And yes this is a good setup. But I failed to understand, why 8800GTS and what would you benefit from SLI ? You could have get better modern day GPU's.

Ah yes, should've mentioned that my budget couldn't stretch to new GPUs and they're still a leftover from my old socket 775 system. Even though they're dated is it still worth running them both in SLI?
Also, if the air duct does fit over the Evo 212, should it be blowing air in or sucking it out? If it doesn't fit, you say there's no need to add the fan to the Evo, i.e more airflow isn't necessarily better?
