What size SSD?

Hi

I am looking at a build with a view to adding an SSD for a modest amount. I understand the benefit of having an SSD is to improve the download times for gaming. Does it matter what size I get, just 8GB or much bigger? Also what exactly is a hybrid HDD/SSD, is it inferior to two separate drives?

Thanx

I personally would go with the SSD as an OS drive with the HDD for additional programs and storage.

I have programs I use regularly on the SSD (LoL, CS:Source) and ones I use from time to time (Adobe Creative Suite).

I hate to knock the hybrids as I have not used them, but I doubt they can compete.

If you needed both a HDD and a SSD on a tight budget then the hybrid would be a better pick but since you have the HDD pick up a 120GB SSD.

With the SSD in the Hybrid drive it is just a cache, so frequently requested information on the HDD is faster to at SSD speeds while everything else is at HDD speeds. Think of it a a fast HDD not a SSD.

SSD has nothing to do with download times, that is reliant on your internet speed.

8GB? Where are you getting this from? 1988?

A SSD helps with loading times and the general snappiness of your system.

If you are satisfied with a few games, 120GB is fine, if not, 256GB should be sufficient.

IMHO 80gb is enough for your OS as well as some programs and 128gb is the "sweet spot" but if you want to put lots of games on it I recommend 256gb. Hybrid HDD/SSD is a mechanical drive(HDD) but with the speed similar to an ssd. This is rare simce inly seagate makes these as of the moment.

Sorry I meant load times not download times....

I thought the idea was the games were mostly on the HDD and just a current game or two went on the SSD to take advantage of the quicker load times.

Yes the hybrid model was Seagate, 1TB HDD and 8GB SSD. I think I can afford this or instead go with the existing 500GB and add a 128GB SSD. What are those two choices like? Beyond this is too much at this time for me.

What's the Seagate model like? Does it work well?

These are the SSD options:

Special! Toshiba 128GB SSD

Plextor 128GB M5S SSD

Samsung 120GB 840 SSD S-ATAIII 6.0Gb/s

NEW! Samsung 120GB 840 Evo SSD

All within my budget.

whatever is on your SSD will load faster. games will load faster/all apps will load faster......if playing in LAN rooms or online this may be of great advantage......... you will however not get more fps though. I gave up on standard HD's a short while back and now run SSD's inclusive.
