I'm going to school for video game programming and I'm a big gamer. With school and the new consoles coming up I decided to use that money for both gaming and school pc. I have $500 this is what I came up with: MOTHERBOARD- asus amd f2a55-m, CUP- and athlon x4 750k, GRAPHICS CARD- XFX Radeon HD 7770 KHz Edition, RAM- 4gb corsair vengeance DDR3, HARD DRIVE- western digital 1 Tb SATA 6 th/s (POWER SUPPLY- I am not sure how to determine how much I need ) CASE- undecided SOFTWARE - Windows 7 or 8? Are all of these compatible? Will they work for what I need. Is there anyway it can be improved with breaking the budget? And what kind of power supply would these need?

For that rig, you will need a 400W - 450W power supply, but go for a good make such as Corsair, Seasonic, Antec or XFX, so that you get the power you need. A quick way of working out whether you will have enough power is by looking at that supplied by the +12V rail on the PSU. Multiply the Amps by the Volts and this will give you the wattage for that rail which runs the GPU and PSU. For overall wattage needed, this helps you work it out:

For good case allowing expansion and with good airflow, the Corsair 300R is hard to beat. If you can get the Fractal Design Arc Midi at a good price, that is also one to look at.

Also, if you can afford a bit more for the CPU, go for the AMD FX-4300, it's a bit better than the x4 750K. AM3+ mobos around same price.
