I have a sata hd in an old computer with vista on it. I want to put the HD in another computer that has xp on it. i just want to do a fresh install of windows 7 on it. Is this possible without wiping the HD first?

yes,it is possible. just set your computer to boot from your install medium (dvd or usb) and choose your new (old) hard drive as the install destination.do a custom or clean install and it will wipe everything and install a fresh copy of windows on it.it will make things easier if you unplug your other hard drive to do this.notw that having been said i take it you are using this hard drive in your computer with xp on it and not putting it back into the old machine as that has almost no chance of working. cheers.

If you're talking about just using the physical hardware, sure. Install Windows 7 fresh. The Windows install will wipe out anything necessary.

Boot from the install DVD and go for it.
