Different Ram Campatibility

My PC already includes ( 2x4 GB ) 8 GB of ram and I am looking to get 8 more, ( I have two more slots ) and was wondering whether or not the ram has to be the same kind as the ram I already have?

Best solution for performance and compatibility is to have a single kit with all 4 sticks the same. But otherwise different sticks will work nearly all the time. Make sure you match the pairs into the right slots in your motherboard however to get dual channel working.

Even getting another set of the same exact model can be problematic, that's why sets are sold in such a multitude of different sizes and amounts - and their prices are a little higher on the higher number of stick sets - the sticks in a package are all tested to work together
