Okay so I really want to upgrade to a 290. Right now it comes with Battlefield 4 so I'd just sell the key to my friend for 40-50. I want to wait for aftermarket coolers to come out but I don't know if those cards will come with battlefield 4 and that's a free fifty bucks for me. I'm comfortable with doing the cooler mod that Tom's posted but I really don't want to void the warranty on my card.

What do you guys think? Do you think the aftermarket cards will have the battlefield 4 bundle?

What do you guys think?

I bought the Sapphire R9 290X BF4 Edition, had to RMA black screens on certain games. The Replacement card runs great. Temps reach 91c to 93c but haven't reach 95c.This is with a 4 pecent overclock, and i replaced the thermal paste.(by by warranty).Great Card.

Do you think the aftermarket cards will have the battlefield 4 bundle?

No telling when they will release a aftermarket card.Could be a month to 6 months.Let alone a BF4 bundle.
Hope this helps your decision.

I really hope so, how much more expensive usually are aftermarket cards than reference? Also getting an unlockable 290 would be nice ;)

Some manufacturers honour warranties on cards you've took apart, you'd have to check with them. Aftermarket cards are usually 10% more expensive, if that.

To my knowledge, the whole thing of being able to unlock a 290 to a 290X was only on a couple of the early XFX cards that were rushed out so they had enough cards for launch, but I might be wrong on that. Either way, people have reported buying two planning to Crossfire them, then only one of them being able to unlock to a 290X, worth a shot but not something to bet on.

Yeah I think it was all the powercolor cards and 50/50 on the xfx cards for a while, it might be stopped altogether now. The only problem is I'm selling my 7970 on friday and will have to stop gaming until aftermarket cards come out hoping they still come with bf4. I hope they don't take too much longer.

Not knowing when and if kills me!

R9 290X is a fantastic card, the audible levels are not as bad as made out and the temps are actually not that far off the 780ti or Titan but considering that the card has a smaller die area and process and still delivers Ultra HD performance in the top tier means you got a fantastic card there, hope you enjoy it.

Would you guys call the 290/X "overkill" for 1080p gaming? I figured it owuld last a really long time at 1080p, even though it more than maxes most games out at 1080p right now.

No,with games like Metro Last Light on Ultra settings it gives my card a run for the Money @ 1080p.

In theory yes, the card was designed for ultra HD resolutions so at 1080P you will likely be running into your Screens limits or better put your bottleneck is your monitor.

Metro is not a good guage for AMD cards, it is very broken for Radeon parts even after drivers we have seen 7970's scoring better than 7970's in crossfire, and it is one game where even mid level Nvidia cards are faster, Believe 4K games took Nvidia on and made a game that is very poor on AMD cards, but for everything else at 1080 the 290X will be maxing them out at really high FPS.

If you want to save and get high level performance at 1080 the 280X or 770 is probably a good option, but I think the 270X is good value for that resolution.

Very well put, I agree a ton of games don't need a 290/x to be maxed right now, it's just hard to pass up that kind of performance for $400. I remember spending that much on a measly 7970 last year, but then again maybe a card will be released at the price next year and do the same thing.
