Hello all,
I have a Dell Studio XPS with a Geforce GTS240 which is about to fail. The fan is chugging and I've managed to get it working again a couple of times, but I'm tempting fate at this point.
I'm limited by my 350W power supply and it looks like most cards that would be good replacements have been discontinued. I've been eyeballing the GeForce GTX 650 even though it wants a 400W power supply.
I run two monitors, further limiting my options.
Any suggestions on what to replace my current card with?
If I wind up having no choice but to upgrade my power supply along with my card, any good combos to recommend.
Thanks for any advice/suggestions, getting desperate, it sounds like my computer is full of hiccuping bumblebees. I miss the quiet old days.

Solution
Well you could definitely look towards the Radeon 7750 which uses less power than the 650 while offering the same performance, and should work with your PSU as well

What's your CPU? wouldn't want to purchase a product too high up which may end up being held back by a weaker CPU for instance

The 650 Ti is not a good deal at this moment

You can go with a 7850 and a new PSU as well

Video Card: MSI Radeon HD 7850 2GB Video Card ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($29.99 @ Microcenter)
Total: $129.98

Or if you can step up a little, the 7870 would be a good choice as well

Yes, you have a point aha. I'm basing this off the assumption that it has a i5 variety of CPU

Given the ultra low price of the 7850 after rebates might as well go for it (with a half decent 500W PSU which should do), he may have the i5 or i7 variant, both of which are still fairly decent performers nowadays

Now if it was a Core 2 Duo, it would be a different story altogether xD

Oh yes, and trust me, I'm dealing with that problem with the family computer... (Dell Studio from 6 years ago, the use is now for gaming... how it lives under the conditions, I don't know...)

Well, are you desperate to get the Geforce name, because the deal for the other one is quite nice

You should be fine then, go for the new PSU and the 7850/7870 if it's within your budget

If you're looking at Nvidia cards however, they aren't much of a good deal at this time

If your budget for the card can extend past the $200 range, you could be looking at getting a GTX 760 or a Radeon 7950

Kinda similar position here, my old rig is laying around with an E8500 in it, I'm considering adding in a 650 Ti some time down the line if it becomes dirt cheap

Yeah that is a better deal than I though I'd get away with frankly. I'm a bit leary since the hookups are different than my current card, might mean I have to upgrade at least one of my monitors to get back up to speed. That would be my hesitation to step away from Geforce.

Well, if it counts, my good rig (I work at a golf course so I have no money over the winter months since all the money I got first year went into my computer haha) only has a 650TI, and I picked it up for $100 on sale.

Update: Parts ordered and swapped out. Computer is working like a dream and is actually quieter than it was before my card's fan started to fail. Thanks again for your help!
