Hi tomshardware people!

I have GT 640m on laptop. It has the optimus thing or whatever it's called, that switches to the integrated HD 4000 when powerful gpu is not needed. This is fine, I like this feature, but recently I've noticed that the GPU is "awake" all the time! Like something is secretly using it.

I've tried closing everything, going into task manager and literally killing ALL non-essential processes (and I mean really non-essential, like there were only 15 processes left, most being service host lol)

GPU shark shows nothing... Default nvidia thingy with the black box shows nothing, other than it being "colored in" as if something is using it, WHICH IT'S NOT... I am confused.

HWiNFO64 shows the GPU using 0.0% same for memory bus, but it is always "on" and generating heat/using power etc. I like when the GT 640m turns off for when I'm just using word or browsing the internet, so even my i7, gt 640m gaming laptop can be quiet, cool and have moderate battery life while throttling the CPU even further, to like 768MHz.

But I can't do that now, something is sitting in memory, because it's usually at 0mb when the GPU is not awake, now it is ALWAYS stuck at 57mb, like something is using it! idk what is using it.

Things I've tried so far:

  • ■ set default option in nvidia control panel to integrated chip, auto select, and high performance gpu. none options fixed it.

    ■ updated to latest driver and control panel

    ■ used different power settings in windows

I have not attempted to change/force fan settings, or tried any type of overclocking software... (yet :p)

Seriously, I'm very close to reinstalling Windows, so any help/advice is useful... thanks for reading.

edit: specs in my sig are old/invalid.
