Hello all,

I wanted to do a tiny bit of updating to my now very long in the tooth motherboard, an XFX 780I SLI. I am going to replace it sometime next year but for now, I just want USB3.

This board has 3 "long" PCI Express slots; and advertises itself as being tri SLI. In slot one I have a 770 GTX. There is a PCIe x1 slot that my video card blocks here. Below that is the empty PCIe slot 2. Below that is a PCI slot with a Xonar sound card in it (I found onboard sound to be problematic). Below that is an Areca RAID card in PCIe slot 3, and below that an empty PCI slot.

I'd like to install this PCIe x1 USB3 controller card into slot 2. It's empty and would fit well. However, I am concerned doing so would affect the performance of the cards in slot 1 and 3. I'm pretty fuzzy on how PCIe lanes are allocated but I know on many motherboards there are 2 slots, and either they are x16 and empty, or x8 and x8 if both populated.

I don't want to install this USB controller card if it will gimp either my RAID or video card. Will that happen, or on the 780i SLI are all 3 lanes x16 if populated? The manual for my card is a little unclear on this. I think they are independant but I figured I may as well ask first.

Thanks a lot and have a great Thanksgiving!

All of them are x16 capable, but I don't think LGA 775 chipsets have enough total pci-express lanes to run more than one of them at x16 speed (LGA 2011 boards usually do, though), plus one of them isn't even PCIe 2.0 according to the Newegg specs you linked, but you should check the motherboard manual to be sure. XFX apparently now requires a signup to view manuals, so it would be difficult for me to look for you.
