here's an image from corsair FAQ part of their site on how high it is...

I have those in dual channel config (2x8 at 1600Mhz) in a MSI Z87 Motherboard and an Corsair Carbide 300R (window version) case
the processor that I am using is a intel core i5 4670K (socket 1150)
I was pretty much decided on using Phanteks PH-TC14PE CPU Cooler and then the clearance issue suddenly slapped me in the face...
returning/replacing the ram is not an option (yep pretty much stuck here kind of my fault for falling to their "extreme performance" stuff)

If sealed-loop coolers are not acceptable, I suggest the Hyper 212 EVO with the fan mounted opposite the ram, in "pull" configuration.its not that sealed loop coolers are not acceptable its just that I know someday it'll fail and I don't want it in my system when that happens
and also the one I like the H100i doesn't fit in my case at all...USAFRet said:
Also, with the 212 EVO, orient it facing up. And/or move the RAM to slots 2 & 4 vs 1 & 3.
are there any other solution other than the 212 EVO? like a 2013-2014 cooler? if I'm not mistaken thats a 2012 cooler?
how about the phanteks if I have the RAMS at slots 2-4? which I currently do have...
here's a picture of the mobo

Both the 212 EVO and the Phanteks you were considering have been around since at least 2011, based on their Amazon listings, but there haven't really been big advancements in air-based cpu coolers since then. As far as putting the rams in slots 2-4, that might work. Based on the dimension diagrams, here are the distances you need the ram to be from the center of the cpu to avoid height issues for different configurations:
212 EVO fan pulling opposite the ram - 25.5 mm
212 EVO fan pushing near the ram - 51.5 mm
212 EVO facing up - 60 mm
Phanteks outside fan opposite the ram - 67 mm
Phanteks fan near the ram - 92 mm
Phanteks facing up - 70 mm
212 EVO fan pulling opposite the ram - 25.5 mm
212 EVO fan pushing near the ram - 51.5 mm
212 EVO facing up - 60 mm
Phanteks outside fan opposite the ram - 67 mm
Phanteks fan near the ram - 92 mm
Phanteks facing up - 70 mm

Sorry, I had unintentionally disabled embedded images for this forum, but now that I see the exact model of your motherboard, I found Newegg images, and my estimate for the distance from the center of the cpu to the second ram slot (presuming standard 75mm spacing for the cooler mounting holes) is only 59 mm, so I'm not sure the Phanteks will fit in any orientation.

Replacing the fan with a slim one won't help, because even without a fan on the side near the ram, the heatsink itself will run into ram that tall in slot 1 or 2. I don't recommend bending the heatspreaders, because that could pull on the memory chips and damage them. afaik, ddr3 ram doesn't require heatspreaders, with the possible exception of extra-fast sticks, such as ddr3-2133 or faster. Cutting off the top of the ram heatspreaders might work, as long as you make sure to vacuum or blow out any debris from the cutting so that it doesn't cause a short circuit.
However, now that I look at your motherboard picture again, I see an additional potential issue: it looks like it has a tall VRM heatsink very close to the cpu, which could also have clearance issues with a tower-style cpu cooler (though it's hard to tell exactly how tall it is). That board looks like it was designed with stock cooling and maybe liquid cooling in mind, but not large tower-style cooling.

I'm guessing its leaning towards water cooling because of the tall VRM or MOSFETS was it...
oh well my dreams of a "simple" CPU cooling is gone
