I saw an MSI HD 7870 OC and XFX 7970 DD in the Black Friday ads for decent prices ($150 and $280 respectively).

Which setup would make less noise? 2x HD 7870 in CF or a 7970? Taking into account the fans and coil whine?

To my understanding, the more GPU intensive a game is, the more coil whine. So I figure if there's 2 video cards, the coil whine noise may be cut in half since the cards don't have to work as hard when in a pair. Is this correct?

Thanks. Also, I currently have a GTX 660, i5-2500K 4.3GHz, and Antec 750W HCG. I want to run BF4 High-Ultra settings.

You shouldnt get any really audible coil whine if your psu is good quality.

The 2 7850 cards will be louder than 1 7970.

Why get 2 7850, when you already have a 660? You could also get another 660 and SLI (if you motherboard and PSU can support)

Coil wine is not granted for every card. It happens to some unlucky users. Me never faced coil wine problems, using both nVidia and AMD GPUs.

Funny that you already have a gtx 660 and you are thinking of cf hd 7870. Hd 7870 is just a bit better than gtx 660 (none more than 2-5 FPS. So I would say the wiser option will be to buy another gtx 660 and Sli it.
But in case you want an answer only from the two options above, then I'd say go for hd 7970, Benchmarks might tell that 2x hd 7870 > 1x hd 7970, but in real a single strong gpu is always better than 2 less strong gpus.
Although I think my first recommendation is the best option here as Sli is more optimised than cross fire. So consider buying one more gtx 660, or a single hd 7970. Cf'ing 7870 while you already have one gtx 660 is not so clever decision.
With either option you might be able to ultra Bf4 with also some aa and msaa.

He want's to get 2 x hd 7870 not 2 x 7850, but as he already has gtx 660 it's not wise to think of buying 2 hd 7870. I'd say sli gtx 660 or buy a new hd 7970

I asked about 2x 7870, not 2x 7850. And, no, my Asus board does not support SLI : /

Well, if I did experience coil whine on both setups, which would give me less whine?
