In another recent thread that was comparing the Formula to the GD65 I was pointed towards the Hero as a better more reasonable alternative.

As I was looking initially at the premium audio on the Formula, a mb with good audio would hopefully stop the need of an additional soundcard and so is probably an important factor. It might be nice to have a ROG motherboard for the name but I guess that's largely irrelevant. Sonic Radar on the ROG also looks nice for directional sound testing but not for actual gameplay as it would take focus away from the enjoyment of the game itself.

An alternative I've seen is the ASrock Extreme6/AC for a little more. How do you guys suppose the ASRock Z87 EXTREME6/AC compares to the Asus VI Hero?

Both the Hero and Extreme6ac have PCB and EMI shielding but the ASRock has a Differential Amplifier whereas the Asus has ELNA audio capacitors. Any idea which would produce the better sound?

Any other major difference between the two in terms of performance in gaming?

And as a final question, is there any benefit of a socket 1155 over the 1150? (ie Gigabyte Z77X-UP7)

Thanks.

I have the Hero and i direct all my sound to spdif. I have a high end audio system that i will not mention other than it is in the 20k$ range. The soundcard in this MB is quite good, i have no idea how the others you mentioned are.

Keep in mind that it doesn't really matter what card you have as long as you have a proper digital out, there will be no DAC involvement and then again no disturbance as long as you have proper PSU quality and proper power in to your household.
