Replacing hard drive and clean install of windows 8.1
Son's laptops hard drive is fried. Data gone. Plan is to get new hard drive and do a clean install of windows 8.1. In what order should this be done? Also is there a problem doing this with a hybrid SSD drive? (I've updated on a mc but never a PC)

Any drive that physically fits in your laptop is fine. A hybrid drive will have some performance advantages (for a price) over a conventional drive.

Order of operations:
1-Buy and install the new drive
2-Install Windows 8.1 on the new drive.
3-Lament the loss of data, and begin a regular routine of backing up important files.
