Using that method it is advised that you use rubber coated vice grips although you don't have to. The vice clamps on the IHS, it doesn't need to be too tight. Do not bend the IHS otherwise your cooling solution won't be as effective. You put the wood in line with the PCB section of the CPU. You use the wood as a buffer so you don't damage the PCB, so place the wood in line with the PCB
