Solution

Yes you want to buy a quality PSU unless your are building a very low budget PC say under $600. I say that because a low budget PC will have low power demands so a fairly low quality PSU will be fine. If you are building a gaming PC then yes find a good quality PSU like Seasonic, Corsair, etc. You dont have to spend a ton if you size your power needs properly. For example most gaming PC's that run one graphics card will be fine with a quality 500 watt PSU.

When you get the rest of your build specked calculate your power needs...

Buy good one. The PSU supplies power to your computer. A poor one, or one without enough wattage to support your computer can cause damage and even short out your components.

Don't cheap out. You will regret it. If you're building a cheap computer, then a decent 500watt PSU will suffice.

I would say it's the most important and the one place you don't want to skimp. You can have the PSU die prematurely due to cheap parts, very low actual wattage or possibly even damage your other components.

When you get the rest of your build specked calculate your power needs: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

Then find a a high quality PSU in the wattage range or a little higher. The web sites that do real PSU testing are hardocp and johnyguru if you want to look at reviews.

cheap power supplies often rate there psu's with some rediculous wattage, like 900w, and charge $30 for it. the 900w rating is for how many watts it releases into your motherboard/gpu/hdd's when it explodes. If you stick to these brands - Antec, Corsair, Seasonic, you will get a good quality psu.

The PSU is the one component in a rig with the potential to fry the rest of the machine, either explosively or over time, you want a good one.

See if you can get an XFX Core 550W, thats a good PSU that will serve you fine if you dont intend to have more than one GPU.

Seconded. I have that running an i5-3570k and 280x. No issues when running Prime95 or Unigine Valley for an extended time.
