Hello Tom's Hardware,

For years my home network has had a persisting problem with our internet. This problem affects everyone connected to my network, both wired and wireless users. I have a DSL connection of 3mbps, with a Netgear DG834G Modem/Router Combo and Netgear WNDR3400 N600 Router.

Problem:
The problem occurs when more than one user is on the network and using the internet. If one user is requesting a big web page or is watching a video, everyone else on the network will be lagged out or timed out for about 5 seconds. It's very annoying when I play a video game online and someone is using the internet net too, I will regularly get lagged out of my game for 5 seconds, and everything resumes as normal. The lag outs occur about periodically when multiple users are online.

I would expect if many users were online together and were using the internet at the same time, the connection speed for each user would be heavily decreased and divided between the users. Instead, users on my network lag out for 5 seconds.

I would really like some help for this problem

Thanks

as martin said, when you contact your ISP, ask for a upgrade on the speed.
from your issue, i can see that it is the the problem of stability. You said when more than ONE user is using the internet, the data gets dropped.
Most likely, esp, with an issue of watching videos and surfing the web, I can tell you that it is the bandwidth issue.
your router and modem does not seem to be an issue.
also, with dsl modem (modem+router) models, when you attach another router to it (modem acting as a "bride"), from my work experiences, I have learned that, since there are, technically, two routers, you are going to loose bandwidth because, you are passing another router (increase in overhead), to actually get to the modem. Basically, the data gets...

If you've used both routers and had this problem then it's definitely an issue with the Internet connection.

Have you contacted your ISP? There may be a fault and/or the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) is too low.

To be honest, 3Mbps downstream is not great for a residential circuit. If you live far from the exchange and if there is heavy contention in the area, this will degrade even more. Again, your ISP should be able to advise more.

To clarify, I use the Netgear DG834G as a modem and the Netgear WNDR3400 connects to it. All wired devices are connected to the WNDR3400 router.

I remember just using the DG834G router alone and I had the same problem with lag outs. How should I go about fixing the problem? What do I ask for when I call my ISP for support?

Basically, the data gets bigger when it passes through the first router for the modem to process and passout onto your WAN network.
Increase your bandwidth, it may solve your issue with your set-up.
3mb speed from your ISP will only decrease more with your second router set-up. good luck!
