In regards to adding more RAM to quad channel RAM setup

I have had trouble finding concrete answers to a couple questions I have in regards to a quad channel RAM setup I'm considering for my new rig.

Mobo has 8 ram slots. If I use 4x4gb, and then decide in the future I need more ram, what does my upgrade path look like? Couple examples:

1. If I ran 4x4gb + 1x8gb - will this run quad channel and then provide an "extra" single channel? Will that even run?

2. 4x4gb + 4x4gb - will both run in quad channel? How exactly does that affect performance?

3. Or would I have to replace the 4x4gb with 4x8gb in order to maintain quad channel?

I've done a lot of reading over the last few hours regarding performance gains and compatibility, and I'm aware quad channel may not even be that important for what I need. I'm more just a little frustrated and curious because I haven't be able to find answers to all my questions.

Thanks. :)

Solution
Yes 4x4GB will be quad channel
4x4GB (in A1, B1, C1, D1 + an 8GB stick would result in 16GB in quad channel mode and 8GB running in single chennel - However a better option would be the 4GB sticks in A1, A2, B1, and B2 and the 8GB stick in C1 that effectively puts 8GB each in Channels A B and C and you have 24 GB running in tri-channel - but that's if the sticks will all play together and there's no guarantee they will, any time you mix DRAM it can be problematic - always best to buy a single package of DRAM in the full amount of GBs that you want - if you do try this approach and have any problem - give me a shout, DRAM is sort of a specialty of mine - again NO guarantees

Option 3 would be the best approach
