I have an Hp h8-1360t with a 3.4g, i7 processor, 16g ram, 2-1tb hard drives, a Hauppage TV card, running Win 7 Home Premium 64bit and an Hp 2711x LED 27" monitor. I purchased the box and monitor for doing video editing. I have had it about a year and have had no problems with it.

A couple of weeks ago, the Radeon video card that came with it died. I decided to replace it with a Galaxy GEForce GTX 650Ti Boost card and until yesterday, everything was working great. I started getting a black screen with a moveable cursor when I booted up. I have to completely shut down and reboot into safe mode. If I restart from safe mode, Win 7 comes up normally. It runs fine until there is no activity for about 30 minutes, then I am back to the black screen and moveable cursor. It is not a "hard error"....at least not yet. I know others have encountered this issue, but they have not been able to reboot into "normal?" Win 7. It seems this has been an issue for a couple of years now. Has anybody come up with a definitive fix? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a safer route.. however, i did find a couple of forums that had the same issue.

I also found this, they were talking about permissions, if you want, try this and maybe it can work.

1. Right click on the system drive

2. Properties -> Security Tab

3. Administrators, System -> checked Full Access

4. Authenticated Users -> added and checked Everything except "Full Control" (Modify was also checked.) (not sure if this is nessesary)

5. Then click apply.

You say you get a black screen wen you try to boot normally. Since you have a movable cursor, I hope your keyboard is still functional? If so, this can be a long shot but try starting explorer.exe.

1. Press CTL ALT DELETE and the Task Manager will show up.
2. Go to Processes Tab
3. RIGHT click on "explorer.exe"
4. Select "End Process"
5. Left click on File on the menu bar
6. Select "New Task"
7. type "explorer" in the window that appears and press enter

Let me know if this works for you

When I get the black screen with only a moving cursor, my keyboard is not functional. However, if I turn the computer completely off, the next time I power it up, it will come up in safe mode. I can get ot Explorer while in safe mode.

Since yesterday, I attempted to revert to an earlier restore point. Now I can no longer get a regular windows session to start after shutting down in safe mode. It is either "black screen with cursor" or "safe mode".

At this point, I am thinking about swapping cables on my hard drives and restoring the OS to my secondary drive and then copying all of my data files from the old primary drive.

I decided to go to a restore point prior to loading the Nvidia drivers. Once I did that, I deleted all of the AMD video drivers that were restored and was able to boot consistantly into windows without any problems....except for the generic vga video driver. As soon as I reloaded the Nvidia drivers, I was back to the "black screen with moving cursor". It must be an Nvidia driver problem....maybe a conflict with a windows update that was applied since the Nvidia driver was installed. What I don't understand is that since I went to a restore point prior to installing the Nvidia drivers, any windows updates should have been backed out as well. After re-installing the Nvidia drivers, I should be able to boot into windows without any issues like when I first installed the new video card.

Now I am not so sure that swapping primary drives and reloading Windows 7 from my factory restore disks will correct the problem.

You can google black screen movable cursor as I just did and saw a lot of forums with the same issues being brought up.

You can troubleshoot with those and see if you get any luck.

I understand what you are saying. I would prefer to keep the Nvidia card, but I just don't have a lot of free time to jack with it. I am working on a video that I need to get finished this weekend.

I just wanted to let you know, I installed my GTX 780 card today and guess what I got your issue. I booted perfectly the first go around, windows auto installed the basic drivers for the GPU and I restarted I got your black screen with the movable mouse. Keyboard disabled.

Solution:
I disconnected GPU, connected to onboard gpu
Booted perfectly to the desktop
Ensured all drivers were uninstalled
Shut down, Seated the GPU
Worked

My guess, windows auto drivers messed mine up for a boot..wish it was easy for you as it was for me

I decided to give it one more try:

Rather than drag my 27" Hp monitor, keyboard and mouse into the kitchen, I used a separate 20" LG LED monitor (using diff dvi cable), keyboard and mouse.

1) I swapped out the hard drives and used my recovery disks to reload my system.
2) Deleted all AMD Radeon drivers.
3) Loaded Nvidia drivers.
4) Booted successfully several times....before and after 114 MS updates applied.
5) Reloaded all software.
6) Booted successfully several times.
7) Reloaded all data from backup.
8) Booted successfully several times.
9) Closed up box and reconnected to original peripherals.
10) Booted and got black screen with moveable cursor.
11) Reconnected to the other LG monitor.
12) Booted successfully several times.

I read somewhere that an inadequate PSU could cause the problem. I have a 460 watt PSU. It doesn't make sense that one monitor works and the other doesn't. If it was a monitor problem, I would not expect this type of error.
