I have this CPU
E 7500 C2D @ 2.93 Ghz,Bus speed 260,FSB 1060,3 mb L2 cache
65 w TDP,wolfdale build

The problem is that it shows only one core in "msconfig",also in "CPU-Z".I also tried in "msconfig" to uncheck No. of processors and than enabling detecthal through cmd prompt (because I have 7,not xp). After restarting it is still showing only 1 is there.I checked the CPU temp. with Real Temp its around 55-57 C (not OCed) and my task manager often shows 100% CPU usage even if only half of it utilized.I need to know is anything wrong with my CPU.Thanks in advance

That certainly seems like an odd problem. I've worked in PC repair for a few years and I can't say I've ever seen a dying CPU exhibit a 'missing core' symptom. What does task manager show? I'd tend to agree with the above poster that the 100% CPU usage seems like it could be malware of some sort. Have you tried disabling all the startup programs in msconfig?

For the 'missing core' problem, it's possible that you somehow disabled one of the CPU cores either in software or in the BIOS.

Try resetting your BIOS configuration back to default, especially if you've made any recent changes. The 'save changes' page of your BIOS should have a 'reset to defaults' button.

If that doesn't work, try booting in safe mode, to eliminate the...

I think you have a malware or virus making your cpu acting strange, not always when the cpu is at 100% its its death, some problems with other hardware motherboard or ram, try reinstall all, but before delete all your hard drive, if the problem persist and your system is old and you have the money buy a new one

If that doesn't work, try booting in safe mode, to eliminate the possibility of most types of malware.

If that still doesn't work, I would try booting off of a clean OS to check and see if the same problem persists. I would choose a Linux Live CD (like Ubuntu) since that would be the quickest and simplest way to check, but if you don't feel comfortable with Linux, maybe you could try installing another, fresh copy of Windows on a separate partition or separate drive.

Finally, if you still experience this issue, then it probably is a hardware problem, but I'm pretty sure it could be your motherboard just as much as your CPU. So, instead of getting a replacement CPU to fit in your old motherboard, I would recommend replacing the motherboard and CPU together, which would allow you to upgrade your platform anyway.
