hey guys, I'm building a new gaming pc and these are the following specs:

Case: NZXT Phantom 410

MBD: MSI 970A-G46 970GX AM3+ SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 SLI/XFire ATX AMD Motherboard

PSU: Corsair Gaming Series GS600 800W 80+ High Performance

RAM: 8GB 1600MHz

CPU: AMD FX 8350 4.0GHz

GPU: AMD R9 290 4GB

My question is, is the R9 290 a good card? does it have good cooling because it only has the stock cooling?
also has the problem between the MSI board and the 8350 been fixed cause i read that a few months back there were some issues?

Solution

There is no doubt that an i5 3570k beats a FX 8350 in gaming, but as the i5 3570k does not support Hyper-Threading (note that games don't use Hyper-Threading), personally I would go for the FX 8350 as it has eight cores and it's ideal for video editing and other multi-thread stuffs and still it's good...

In terms of performance the R9 290 is pretty great. However, with the stock cooler, it most likely won't reach its true potential and temps are gonna really hot. I would suggest getting an aftermarket cooler for it. The rest of the build is pretty much all good to go.

as junred56 said the 290 could probably do with a new cooler but i would only recommend that if you plan to overclock it. From alot of reviews on it the full loads temps are around 70 with stock cooling which is normal. looks like a solid build to me happy gaming mate

It's still a great card though even with the stock cooler. Just don't be too surprised if temps are high and your pc gets loud. However, it will still perform pretty well especially if your only gaming with one monitor and at 1080p. 60fps on most games bro. Enjoy!

According to the benchmarks, FX 8350 is not as good as i5 3570k in gaming. So, for a gaming rig, it's much better to get a 3570k for the same price.
I think it would be better if you get a 2x4GB of ram instead of a single 8GB.

he has probably got 2x 4gig sticks and as for the 8350 vs i5 3570k both cpus will do the same job in game performance minus a 2-3 fps difference and you will probably find an 8350 cheaper then an i5

By the looks of it, it seems that he already bought the parts so he probably can't change it now. However, I do agree that a 3570k would have been ideal for gaming. But still, his processor will be just fine.

Yea i am gonna have 2X4gb, also will the case be big enough for everything? I would maybe go for a Gigabyte Windforce GTX 770 but im trying to stick with AMD for the first time cause i'm gonna be playing games like BF4 and I'm hoping Mantle will give AMD cards the edge of Nvidia for the game.

I was gonna get a Sapphire R9 280X toxic but they dont have stock anywhere here in SA and they will only be getting in Jan 2014 :(

good idea with going for amd as the mantle does seem like a winner for performance plus the power consumption/heat/pricing is hard to beat but even if you do go with the gtx 770 you will be happy its a great card.

As far as I know, both amd radeon and nvidia cards are great in gaming, but radeons are cheaper while nvidia cards are more expensive and they do much better in some of other softwares. (Some softwares use nvidia cuda and open gl. radeons only have open cl and it's still so limited in use)

So :
i5 3570k + Radeon GPU = Ideal pair for gaming
FX 8350 + Nvidia GPU = Great , Multi-purpose pair

As I said their prices are the same:
