Hi guys, I've just picked up a fancy new EVGA GTX 780 Ti SC! I'm having this weird issue where my PC is randomly shutting down while using it. Not, like, it blue-screens and reboots or something but instantly powers off, like the plug was pulled out of the wall. I'll be doing something and everything will turn off instantly and my PC will be silent for a few seconds before it reboots.

I THINK overheating might be the issue, since as soon as I run EVGA OC Scanner (like, within a second) it does this, but my past experiences with overclocking is that the PC will normally stutter and blue screen before eventually rebooting. I've never seen this instant shut down thing before. I thought maybe my PSU wasn't powerful enough, but I was running 2x GTX 570s in SLI before this and never had this issue, so my PSU should have enough juice.

Any clues guys?

Looks like the PSU uses multiple 12V rails. Previously you had it connected to one rail, which was not powerful enough to power the card. Using an adapter you draw power from two separate rails - power draw is balanced across the rails and no overload occurs.

It came with the Alienware case I have, so I have no idea, sorry! I haven't had issues with it so far, and I've had this case for about 2 years now, but if you're pretty sure the PSU is at fault, I could probably replace it.

If it helps, I was playing Tomb Raider just now, and I got about 15 minutes of gameplay before it it did the whole instant shutdown and reboot song and dance.

How would I be able to find out which it is?

PSU should have a label similar to this one:

If it has manufacturers name and model, please post them too.

Well, we can rule out that the card is dead since your were able to play tomb raider. It's probably the psu. Try re-inserting your old graphics card and see whether it runs normally or not. If it does, we can assume that your psu can't handle it. Otherwise, it could also mean that your card might be busted. but not dead.

Based on this, I would have to say its a power issue. In the Evga website, it says there that you need at least a 600 watt psu with a total of 42 amps on the 12v rail. Your psu can only sustain a maximum of 38 amps on the 12v rail.

There may well be a sticker somewhere on the PSU, but it's not visible from either the inside or the outside, as it's held in a little enclosure. Looks like I'd need to disassemble it to find it.

We've had a bit of luck! I used the 2x 6 pin to 1x 8 pin power converter cable that came with the card as the card's 8 pin power source instead of... Well, it's kinda hard to explain, but basically, the PSU has 2 two PCI Express power cables and they both have 2x 6 pin plugs at the end, but one of these plugs also has an extra 2 pin plug that you can clip to the 6 pin to convert it to an 8 pin.

Anyway, I plugged in the power converter cable, and ran EVGA OC Scanner and it didn't instantly shut down! Hopefully there was just some weird PSU issue, like maybe there wasn't enough power coming to the 8 pin socket. So like, when the card starts to rev up as it's been playing the game for awhile, it finds it can't draw enough power, so it's all "nope" and shuts off. I mean, plugging 3x power connectors (one directly into the card and two via the converter cable) into the card is certainly a larger number of plugs then than two! :D

*EDIT* Had a good long play session of Tomb Raider, around half an hour. Didn't shut down! Problem solved hopefully!

That sounds about right, I've been able to run both games and EVGA OC Scanner without the shutdown issue, so I feel pretty confident that the issues has been solved! Thanks for your help guys!
