Ok, so I installed a new SSD yesterday and put windows 8 on it. After getting everything set up, I formatted my old HDD. Now whenever I boot up my computer, Windows is asking me which Windows it'd like to boot (8.1 on the SSD or 8.1 on the HDD.)

How do I stop this from happening? My old HDD says "452 out of 460 gb free" so it seems like it's formatted, yet it still prompts me to select which OS to boot?

Solution

the mbr for the system is still on the old hdd.

-it's because you installed windows with the old hdd plugged in.
-as a test try to start up with the old hdd unplugged, you won't be able to start windows

-there are a couple of solutions, most based around using the windows recovery dvd and the fixmbr command

-or you could just ignore it and disable the boot selection:
start a msconfig (start run msconfig)
and there's a boot selection option (second tab on the left)

1.in windows go to Computer
2.then click the computer tab
3.then click manage
4.double click storage
5.double click device management
6.find your old drive you should see its has two parts
7.first left on one of the parts and right click and click delete
8.do the same on the 2nd part and last of all reformat the drive and create a new volume

if u need any help let me know

in your case, there will be more options there, correct? leave just one (win 8.1 from ssd) and verify that the wait for user input smth (dont remember the exact option name) is not selected. this tab is what sets the select menu when windows starts. this is the easy solution, where you leave the mbr on the old drive.

second one is to unplug it, and recompose the mbr on the ssd only. there are tutorials around but you risk killing your windows install if you aren't careful. do this only if you need to get the hdd out.
