New PC will not start!

Hello,

I have built a PC once before, and the build went fine.

However, I have built a computer for my brother today, and it does not work.

Here is what I have tried:

  • Built the PC (with static mat and wrist band, on a hardwood floor on a table)
Brought the PC upstairs to use
Turned on the power button and the fans simply spinned for a second (all of them, not sure about the PSU as it is a bottom mounted, so need to look at that), then stopped.
Checked all connectors where connected (which they were, did this twice)
    Still same result
Removed the graphics card and network card, and unscrewed the motherboard from its stand offs and lifted it, then placed it back down onto the stand offs (to check if it was shorting on the stand offs)
Plugged it in to the power on the desk, once everything was back, and it tripped the circuit of the house.
Unplugged it and took it upstairs, it did not trip the electric, and we had the same result.

I'm not sure what to do now, and feel really guilty that I have broken the computer, since I built it, and my brother spent all his money on the PC.

One thing I did notice was that when it is plugged in, the motherboard light is on, if I turn it on then, it does the same thing (like before), however, if I turn off the power, and not wait for the light to completely disappeared, it will not start at all when turning back on (no fan spin at all)

I am very confused about what to do at the moment, I have read the troubleshoot forum, but it does not help.

Also I disconnected the 4-pin CPU power, and it still had the same result as if it was in.

Please help, many thanks.

sounds like a dead motherboard. sometimes they come dead. but lets troubleshoot to make sure. first you don't use the psu that popped the circuit breaker. if that's the new psu, then i would contact the merchant and tell them the psu killed your motherboard and ask for compensation. if it was an older working psu, and it still works i'd be on the warpath about the motherboard being shot....

that said, pull all the ram out, and try it one at a time in each ram slot. pull out the gpu... try resetting the cpu. if you try all of that and the computer doesn't work, then you probably have a dead motherboard

It is the new PSU that caused it to short, and it only shorts downstairs on a specific circuit, just talking to my brother, we believe it might have been because there are some lights coming off that circuit, as it does not seem to do it when upstairs in the place we are placing the computer.

I am not sure if it is a dead motherboard, since the light does come up on the motherboard, and also the fans do spin for a second when powered on. I have tried removing RAM/Processor/GPU and all that, but its the same thing, since it does not going into POST.

Going to see if there are any stand offs underneath the motherboard/screws/wires etc, then I'll get back to you.

Hopefully the motherboard is not dead.

Yep, there were 2 stand offs underneath the motherboard which were not being used, and were touching the motherboard, removed them, but now not even the little light on the motherboard appears, nor do the fans spin. So either the power supply is shot, the motherboard is shot, or both the 3 pin power cables I tried are shot.

Not sure what to do now, don't wish to attempt to test the power supply myself, may end up taking the power supply to a computer shop to test.

try another psu in the system. that will tell you if your psu is the only thing not working. problem is even if it still doesn't work i would still replace your new psu... because it sounds like it blew up your system... at least i'd say the possibility is strong that's what happened.

We are taking the whole system to a computer shop in a moment, simply because we don't wish to spend more time faffing around with it, and want to know that it is done.

I will ask them to test the power supply, and test the new system with a different power supply, then hopefully we can eliminate what is wrong with the system.

Seems the power supply was the problem, the man at the computer shop tested it and nothing is coming out of it, no power at all. It was most probably the motherboard that had shorted, and the lights on the circuit that overloaded the power supply, and caused the internal fuse to blow. Anyway, we will be sending it back for a replacement, and have bought another cheap power supply till we get the other one, and the machine works brilliant. Got Windows 7 64 bit installed on the SSD, and all is working.

Thanks for your help.

lucky lucky... you don't know how lucky you are. when a psu dies it often takes the cpu and motherboard with it; heck i've seen seen them take SSds and video cards with them too. so this is actually the best news you could have from this situation!

Glad it's up and running. if you don't mind could you let me know what brand and model the psu was?

It wasn't cheap, it was a 500w Modular Corsair Builder Series (Corsair CX500M). The man at the computer shop reckons it was because its Corsair that it didn't blow the other components, as they are well built, and it would have stopped other stuff from breaking.

Its all running now though, we have all the SSD plugged in, video card, and it is running nice, getting about 8 seconds boot time, and about 6 seconds shutdown, and I installed all the programs he needs on there yesterday.

Thanks for your help.
