Is this PSU sufficient for R9 290?

Hey guys i recently downgraded from a Corsair TX 850 to a CX 750 because the TX was making strange noises and i thought id save money as 850 was a bit overkill.

But now when im gaming i cant last more than 10 minutes before the screen shuts off and then the system powers down.
I have an FX 8350 OC to 4.8Ghz but surely 750w is enough for my system. Is it maybe because its a lower end CX PSU?

Right now im running Prime95 and MSI Kombuster for 15 mins and no power downs. Is the PSU the problem or does it sound like something else?

Thanks

CX models are for simple builds. TX is better than CX. I would return that CX and get a better PSU like a HX or AX.
Maybe that TX is just faulty. Can you RMA and get a new one?

Prime95, if I recall, only demands the CPU. Gaming demands both the CPU and GPU. The GPU is generally a much bigger power hog than the CPU so it could be that gaming is not working due your PSU just not quite being sufficient enough. Knowing your full system specs can help fully determine this.

Try to save your OC profile if it's possible, then reset your bios back to defaults. And run the test again and see what happens.

Thats why i was running MSI Kombuster along side...

Also i should probably mention that i got an SSD yesturday so i have a fresh install of windows, and freash up to date drivers.

Windows 7 x64
Asus sabertooth 990fx
Sapphire R9 290
FX 8350 4.8Ghz
8GB DDR3 Avexir ram 1600
CX 750w
Crucial 120GB SSD M500
1TB Seagate Barracuda
Phanteks ph tc14pe
Corsair 600T

I have absolutely no cooing problems. The 8350 never goes higher than 48c while gaming and 54c in stress test. And the r9 290 stays below its 94c threshold.

I think i was just stupid and didnt realise that CX was for simple builds.
But i thought it would be ok as i used to have a 600w CX on the same CPU and an OC 7950

Where is your old PSU? What noise was it making? I believe it was a coil whine?
For that, it's most likely the PSU and video card are not working well together.
Return the CX and get this.

I just played Metro Last Light with high settings and 2x ssaa and no problems?
Yet on Sniper elite V2 without ssaa it kept shutting down after 10 mins. Is it 100% the PSU that is the problem?

As for my old 600w CX its just sitting there, i guess ill sell it when i know someone who wants to make a pc.
And the TX 850 is packaged up ready to go back to amazon. Yes it was an annoying coil whine that also seemed to react to mouse movements. It would get louder when i moved the mouse.
Before that i also had a 750w TX with the exact same problem, thats why i changed series to the CX. Which doesnt make the noise btw.

Ok ill look into getting a HX

Unfortunately in the UK our prices are alot higher on some components, i could only find a HX 650 and it was £120, i dont really want to spend more than £100

Can you recommend anything else?
Thanks

Antec EarthWatts does not include power cords, but you already have so it doesn't matter.

For the Antec the 12v rails can only use 576w max combined. Will that be enough? remember i overclock too.

PSU just calculated 647w recommended, i put 90% load all components for some headroom. And 600w minimum.

That Antec PSU is made by Delta, other EarthWatts are made by Seasonic.
Both are good PSU, so it doesn't matter what you pick.
But if your calculation comes out to 647w, I would get this

Ok the PSU arrived late yesterday instead of Monday and it seemed to have stopped the issue until 10 minutes ago -_- The PC was running fine on all sorts of intensive and not so intensive games since yesterday. With the power plan back to high performance and the 290 OCed to 1100/1375.

Just now on chivalry it randomly closed down again :(  I had only been in a game for about 10 minutes. What could this be? Ive never seen this happen except on that CX 750w and now for the first time on this EVGA 750w
Please help

So it was working with that power settings and 290 OC for almost 1 day and now it's closed down again?
What is this close down? Is it just the game exiting, the system restarting, or system had actually power off and it must be turn back on by pressing the power button?
Are you using a outlet stripe? If yes and there are other devices shared with your PC, then unplug them and plug them to another outlet, leaving only your PC and monitor the only 2 cables plugged in.
Another thing to try is use a new outlet stripe if you have one laying around or swap one that you already have in your house.
Set the performance back to balance and see if that helps
Swap the 290 with the 7950 and see if the problem still exist
Unplug all not important devices from your computer leaving only the keyboard, monitor, mouse, and power cord and try again.
Update motherboard bios

Yer it was fine for the whole day, now im lucky if i can get through 3dmark 11 benhcmark without it powering down. Basically the screen looses input first, then the GPU fan goes to 100% and then the PC shuts down about 5 seconds later. Its not temps, ive been monitoring. Sadly i had to get rid of the 7950 to buy the 290 but i can try another power strip.
thanks

Sounds like your gpu might be the problem.
Update motherboard bios. Reset your gpu back to stock clocks.

Found something on another site.

I just ran heaven 4.0 for about 50 minutes windowed and didn't get a black screen. (Hynix, overdrive disabled, overclocking through afterburner only, 1100/1400).

95% sure these black screens are memory related. Only time I ever got a black screen was when I tried overclocking the memory through OVERDRIVE (to 1500 MHz), which was FINE in windows, UNTIL I restarted the computer..then it would black screen on the desktop, almost as soon as CCC loaded

Ok i just got back and ive updated BIOS and put clocks to default. Going to test it out see how long it lasts before a shutdown. Also thought i would mention that yesturday i updated my drivers to 13.11 beta9.5 which are brand new, i doubt they are causing the problem but thought i would mention it.
As for the black screen mentioned in that post, ive experience this aswell, but alot of 290s have been getting it and the problem was meant to be fixed for some in the beta 9.4. Which for me luckily it did.
thanks

So i just survived 3 runs of 3dmark 11, 1 was on stock clocks and 2 overclocked. Results were normal. MSI Kombuster survived 20 mins on OC and stayed at 94c and below.
Ill update in a couple hours once ive done some gaming.
Thanks for the continued support btw

Ok tonight i have had 2 shutdowns while gaming, for about 3 hours it seemed stable on a few games. Then all of a sudden the video goes out and the pc stayed on but i had to hard reset. Then about 15 minutes of gaming later it did the shutdown.
I dont know what to do.

According to that link, it seems that those who are experience shutdown and blackscreens have 290 or 290x using Elpida memory.
Best option would be to RMA your card.

OK i think it may be fixed. Since the last post the only thing that has happened is 1 black screen, which has been normal since having the 290. I also switch the BIOS switch on the GPU back to the factory BIOS. Because ive been using the official BIOS released from sapphire for there 290s. I also went over my motherboard BIOS in detail to make sure everything was correct.
