System freezes when writing on HDD

Hi there,

quick question: is it possible for a HDD to read normally, but to only freeze the system if it writes?

The background to my question: My system freezes whenever I download multiple things or bigger files. It otherwise operates normaly, but might freeze here and there in idle mode too. It does happen however always, when downloading multiple/bigger files after a minute or so.

Have already tried anything else (network cards etc.), so I think it might actually be the HDD.

Thanks for answering the above question or any additional insight!

Yes, it is the HDD. You could run a chkdsk x: /f/r, where x is the drive in question. It might run into some bad sectors and if not repairable it will mark them NOT to be written.
OTOH, if the HDD is more than a few years old, I would strongly suggest you back up all the important files from it, then replace it as soon as possible. Impending HDD failure is not fun.

How much free space does it have? Has it recently been defragged? It could just be the system finding difficulty finding room for the new download without splitting it up (fragmenting) too much.

In Command Prompt, type chkdsk x: /r where X is the drive letter. You may find some bad sectors or even clusters are repaired. by that process.

It has about 1,5 TB of free space, has been defragged and checked with different tools (it always is declared being "healthy"). I have tried different SATA cables and connections to the PSU, but the problem prevails. It happens more often now than a week ago and I can actually pin-point to things I have to do, so that the freeze happens, which was harder when this whole thing started.

I'm thinking about buying a new HDD and mirroring the whole content, since it's my system HDD.

Sadly no.
The only thing that always pops-up after booting is the failure to load " \Driver\WudfRd für das Gerät SWD\WPDBUSENUM\_??_USBSTOR#Disk&Ven_Generic&Prod_USB_SD_Reader&Rev_1.00#920321111113&0#{53f56307-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}.", which is, afaik, something that has to do with my smart card reader.

If the HDD is not making funny noises, it could be the controller on it's board that's faulty. Regardless, you want to get your files backed-up and then replace the HDD. Can't trust this one anymore.
