Unlocked Phenom II X3 Oddity

I just helped a friend unlock his Phenom II X3 B75 to a stable quad core. Needless to say, he is quite pleased.
But what kind of took me by surprise, is that I expected the unlocked 3GHZ Ph II X3 to be listed as a Phenom II X4 945 in CPU-Z. However, it is reporting that it is a Phenom II X4 975 instead (still at 3GHZ). It's kind of an old chip for CPU-Z not to have that error corrected by now. He's using the latest version of CPU-Z.
Could it be that these started out life as faulty Phenom II X4 975 chips down-clocked to 3GHZ and one core disabled for whatever reason?

it could have, a faulty higher end chip that doesnt make the requirements for that chip will prob be downclocked and possibly cores disabled alot easier than just junking the chip. Or it could just be a error or something when i OC my x6 it some times changes to a 1050t and a x4 960t goes to a 1605t. It may have went to a 975 as its previous model is a B75 and as a quad could of added the 9 in replacing the B.

He may also have a possible partially defective x4 975 as mentioned, if stable as a quad try to oc if not well be happy with the extra core lol
