I have been asked to help my son's friend build a gaming computer, because I have building them for our family for ten years now. Since it's someone else's money I want to be more careful about my choices, and I can think of no better way to test them than to put them before this knowledgeable community. Based on a few hours' research, much of it on Tom's and NewEgg (my supplier of choice), I came up with this:

OS/Game HD: 256 gb Samsung 840 SSD

Storage HD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s

HS: Cooler Master 212 Plus or Hyper T4

Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 Mid-Tower Case

Memory: G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) (PC3 12800)

PSU: Corsair RM Series RM750 or SeaSonic X Series X-750

Video Card: GeForce GTX 760 4gb

MoBo: GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-D3H LGA 1155 Intel Z77

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy 3.4/3.8 GHz

Monitor will be 1920 x 1080

I used 16 gb RAM because of a recommendation somewhere on Tom's or Anand to use lots of RAM with an SSD to lengthen its life and and increase performance. (Now I can't find it.)

True about 1155 being a dead-end, I went with the CPU because of the November 2013 recommendations here for best CPUs for the money. Now that you mention it, though, my son's overclocked mobos have a tendency to go out after a year or two, so looking for replacements would be harder. Any suggestions as to a good Haswell mobo/CPU combo at or below $300?

Great memory! I have it on another computer, but I had to take a hacksaw to the heat spreader on one to allow it to fit with the Cooler Master 212 heatsink. The beauty of the G.SKILL Trident X Series heat spreaders is that they come off with a couple of screws. As I said above, I got 16gb because of a recommendation somewhere to have more memory with an SSD. If this is wrong, please let me know because I agree that 8 gb is more than enough for gaming.

I went with 750 watts in case he wants to do SLI/Crossfire, but now that you mention it that's not a likely possibility. Any suggestions as to what I should use instead? And the NVidia 770 is $400, which seems pretty pricey for this rig. Are you sure it's worth it, even with the Haswell? (I mentioned earlier that I specified 16 gb RAM because of the SSD but am willing to be talked out of it ...)

What I saw was this quote: "In essence, there is no such thing as too much memory in a desktop with solid-state storage. The more RAM you add, the better off endurance looks, and the more I/O performance you get from the storage subsystem." 32 gb just ain't gonna happen, but when I saw saw those 16 gb sticks with the removable heatsinks I fell in love. (That hacksaw job mentioned previously was neither pretty nor fun.) Still, getting 8 gb of GSkill for $50 is a pretty cheap solution.

Yaaa,I would still stay with 8gb though. I dont think there would be much of a difference.

OK thanks! But what Haswell CPU should I use with it?
