Asus 7950 DCUII v1 shutting down at 63~c

Whenever the gpu core hits around 63c my screen goes black and I have to restart my computer. My only workaround for this is to increase the fanspeed to 100% and drop the vddc but it still makes it to around 55c. Are there any other solutions available to me? I really want to try overclocking the card and I'm a bit worried what is gonna happen when summer comes around next year.

The guy I bought it from off of Amazon cleaned it before it was sent to me, around 2 weeks ago. 63c is still cool for a gpu to be shutting down though, don't you think?

yes, the danger zone is 85+. Maybe the guy from amazon knew about it?

I emailed him about it, he said he didn't have any issues with it but he was willing to refund me for it. I honestly don't want to go through the hassle of returning it so I'd like to troubleshoot it at least.

Used two different power supplies (50A and 28A on 12v rail) and both at the same time to power it. It still shutdowns at 63c regardless of core/mem speeds or voltage. Weird thing tho is when I press into the cooler it increases the temps to 70-80 but doesn't black screen out.

you know what, try underclocking(or even overclocking). A while ago i read somewhere that unstable speeds may cause driver crashes.

"the screen turns black and i have to restart the pc", pretty obvious it is a graphic issue (you are right in some way it can always be any part) but this makes op think it is the gpu.

I was using two 6770s in crossfire before I got the 7950 two weeks ago. Never had issues with the 6770s but had issues day 1 with the 7950.

I also get 5 post beeps whenever I restart my comp after it goes black, which is a gpu error according to Asrock.

When it crashes at 63c the screen goes completely black like the computer is turned off and I can't see even my mouse cursor. When the driver crashes I can see my desktop and I get a little popup saying driver has crashed and has successfully recovered or my screen just completely freezes but I can still see whats on it. I don't get the latter that often, rarely even but I most definitely get the former as soon as it hits 63c.

I'm working around it by dropping the voltage and increasing the fanspeed but I still don't know what the cause is. The only ideas I have left for trying to fix it are applying some more thermal paste to it or try putting a cooler from one of my 6770s on to it if it will fit. More thermal paste isn't really a fix since 63c is still cool for a gpu but that might give me more oc headroom. So my only guess is that there is something messed up about the cooler or the card itself and I wouldn't know how to fix that. So if you have anymore ideas please let me know.

I did some more testing and now I'm thinking my clocks might just be unstable for the amount of voltage I'm giving them. I was able to hit 71c before it went black screen.
Core: 631 Mem: 921 VDDC: 1300 Fan speed: 0

Then tried with different clocks
Core:1100 Mem: 1250 VDDC: 1168 Fan speed:39 and 100
Crashed at 71c and 65c

I think I'll redo my overclock and make sure it's actually stable. Either of you know the stock clocks for my card? I went to the Asus website and updated my drivers and bios as soon as I got the card so I never saw the clocks.

what psu do you have? not delivering enough power when gpu is under load?
Cpu: temperatures? is it overclocked(stable)? look at the cpu and gpu usage while playing a game if the cpu is at a 100% all the time and the gpu is not it might be a pc shutdown to prevent damage to the cpu.
