Battlefield 4 freezing

Picked up BF4 yesterday. Game consistently crashes after 10-20 minutes of playing, in both single and multiplayer. Game will freeze, forcing me to CTRL + ALT + DEL, go to the task manager and then I see a window that says "Battlefield 4 has stopped working."

My specs (off top of my head, not at home):

Windows 7-64 bit
8GB RAM
GTX 660ti
AMD A8-3850 (quad core)

I know my CPU is pretty weak, but even changing the settings all to low didn't help much.

Since it's crashing in both single and multiplayer, I figure it isn't the servers. Any fixes or ideas?

What's your CPU and GPU temperatures when playing BF4?
Is it just happening on BF4?

To be honest, not sure. Sorry for being a noob, but can you recommend a good way to check that?

Also, I have had no other issues with any of my other PC games (Borderlands 2, Batman Arkham Origins, XCom, Starcraft, etc.). The only other PC game issue I've had is with Metro 2033 and I fixed that by turning off the PhysX and changing the DirecX to 9.

Thanks. I won't be home till late tonight. I'll download that and check it out. What temps should I be looking for (what's bad, what's good) and if it's too hot, what are the solutions?

You should be looking at the max GPU and CPU temperature.
When you read the CPU temperature make sure it's the CPU and not the CPU socket. The CPU temperature will be next to where it says TWPIN1.
We don't know if it's the cause of the problem yet but it's a place to start. Solution if it is the problem might be a better CPU cooler or a case fan.
Too hot would be over 65c for the CPU and not sure for the GPU but i'll check for when you post the results. A graphics driver update might help too if your drivers aren't already up to date:)

Ah, sounds good! My graphics drivers are up to date, so I should be set there. I'm just wondering if this is a problem on my end or the developers -- heard BF4 is crashing for a ton of people.

It might be a BF4 problems. Most games nowadays are released needing some final polishing to the code. A patch might fix the problem but checking on the temperatures is a good idea to be safe:)

Thank you so much for your help! :)  Hopefully I don't need to do much tweaking. Any messing around inside the PC case gives me worries. I'll download and check the temps later tonight and then post an update! :)

It's no problem helping:)
I'll check in the morning for your post. It's 1.10am here in the UK and i'm going to sleep

OK, this time it crashed maybe in like a minute? (Although I was running Windowed mode to see the CPU/GPU temp).

There was no TWPIN1, instead it showed my CPU and each individual core temp. My GPU temp never got above 37 percent and I believe the highest any of my CPU cores was around 40. But right around when it crashed, each core was around 27c and my GPU was 37c. For the record, I don't think throughout my time trying to play that my fans have kicked on or I heard my computer working extra hard, for what it's worth. Hope this helps, let me know if I need to look at a different number. But there was definitely no temps above 40 or 50 in any part of the monitor.

I believe it was. I tried repairing the install through Origin and update the game, said it was updated. I tried some other things as well (reinstalling DirectX, other assets) but to no avail. I'm uninstalled the game and reinstalling right now, maybe I had a bad install?

Talked to an EA rep online, went through their troubleshooting (clean boot, disabling some Origin settings, creating a new Windows user account) and that didn't work either. Losing hope :(

Don't lose hope:)

A statement from EA
We are working on a PC client patch at the moment and hope to release it soon. We will share the patch notes once we have the patch contents finalized. The main focus is to fix as many crashes as possible, starting with the issues affecting a large number of players. We will update you once we are ready to release new server updates. We are currently working on server update #5, with four being released so far.

If your reinstall doesn't fix it I think it's a matter of waiting. Make sure you update after a reinstall. The patch is over 1gb

Gah, hopefully it won't be much longer. Other than going through Origin and clicking "update game" is there any other way to make sure I have that patch? Thanks for your quick and speedy responses! :)

The patch can only be downloaded via Origin. It will pop up when you start the program and have Battlefield 4 installed. Sucks I know but hopefully you'll get it working. Your system is fine and it's just this one game so just hope it's okay. Also keep an eye out for new driver updates for your graphics card. I switched from Nvidia to AMD because of driver crashes but that was back in the Windows Vista days.
Post back if it's working.:)

Just a question since I don't know much: could my CPU be the problem? Pretty much everything I read about it says it's a pretty weak CPU. I figured my video card would make up for it and I normally run high/ultra on all my games. Heck, even the GeForce Experience tool optimizes the game on mostly high/ultra. Just wondering, since I know the A-8 CPU is more for low performance things.

If it was just multiplayer on Battlefield 4 I might say possibly it could be the problem but your CPU can handle single player just fine. Multiplayer uses more CPU power. Here is some CPU benchmarks for single player.

Another suggestion (the game is still crashing. Sometimes I play for 30 seconds, sometimes I play for 15 minutes. But it always crashes, can never finish a match): My graphics card is the MSI gtx 660ti power edition: (http://us.msi.com/product/vga/N660Ti-PE-2GD5-OC.html)

I'm pretty sure this GPU is overclocked by the manufacturer. I've read reports of people who have overclocked GPUs, dialing it back to normal settings and the game performing better. Think I should see if I can turn down the clock settings?

It shouldn't cause problems being factory overclocked but if you feel it's worth a try it can't hurt:)

Well, might as well try! Also, for what it's worth, when I check the event report (or whatever it's called) and find the crash it says the fault module name is bf4.exe....that means the problem has to do with the game, not my computer, right? Or am I being very noobish right now. I don't mind trying to find tweaks to make it work better as long as I have the peace of mind that my PC isn't causing the problem and a potential patch could fix.

It does seem like a Battlefield 4 problem to me. It's a shame you didn't have an AMD graphics card because the Mantle update is due soon and should give a performance boost for AMD users.
You should also keep in mind that it is heavily optimized for AMD graphics cards. AMD pumped a lot of money into the game

It's a bummer that BF4 is having so many issues because it's an awesome game. If you need a good ps4 trophy guide, definitely check out here for ps4 cheats and trophies: PS4 Battlefield 4 Guides

Yeah, I'm relatively new to PC gaming. Saw the GTX 660 ti for a really good price plus it came with Borderlands 2 and just jumped on it. And I knew even less about PC stuff back then I do now :)

I too have random crash's on BF4 but just on my desktop I am running Windows 7, I5 4570, gtx760-oc, 8 gig corsair ram, ssd drive. I have run many stress tests on the system (Heaven GPU test) and such and they never crash. Now my Laptop ASUS G75, Win 8.1 preview CPU I7 3610QM, GPU 670M, 12 gig ram, ssd also and No crash's . The Difference is the Operating system there are studders when playing under 7 but not 8.1, as much as I love win 7 battlefield 4 plays much better under win 8.1 right now, but they should be able to patch this problem hopefully this week.

I do not actually have a solution but just to let everyone know that when my sound loop freeze happened and finally got task manager up I noticed my cpu processor which is AMD 8150 3.1 GHz standard (I am not overclocking) I noticed from task manager my processor was clocking 3.7 GHz. Not sure why the game causes that and my cooling for the processor is already maxed out. So I am not sure if it caused any overheating on my processor(doubt it with what I got). Just some additional info.
