It might be more than just coincidence that this problem started after updated NVidia drivers.

It happens every 5 minutes now and has become an extreme annoyance, the mouse pointer will freeze in place, or it still show the incorrect mouse pointer, such as a text cursor at the main window bar, etc.

Maybe 1 out of 10 times this happens, it will result in a total system hang and I have to hit the reset button to reboot.

I used Process Explorer to see if I have any strange CPU hogs ... is it normal for the System Idle Process to be using 60%-80% of your CPU?

I seem to be picking up more Spyware than normal lately, too, that would normally be caught by MBAM Pro, Avast! and SUPERANTISPYWARE, junk search engine plugins and the like.

I hesitate to roll back to earlier graphics drivers because ... well I'm enjoying playing BF4 and I really hope that's not the problem.

Any troubleshooting tips would be very much appreciated, thank you

Personally i think if scanning takes more then 5-10% of the cpu then i'm scanning too much. A lot more can be achieved by simply being more careful around the net and never ever blind pressing yes/next.

Consider activating the dep in windows:

(turn it on for all except none :D)

It's a very nifty feature paired with uac and doesnt cost any processor time.

Yes, a clean reinstall is probably the best solution if you dont find anything out of the ordinary.
what's using the missing 30-40%?

the resource manager can sort by average cpu usage so it can help you pinpoint the culprits. I really think you should stick to one antivirus solution that you like best, under normal usage there's no reason to have 3.

At that moment the missing 30%-40% was from MBAM and Antispyware scans, updates of those, an open browser, Skype, etc

I just ran an Boot-time Scan a week ago, along with the above two excellent removal tools. Windows Firewall is in place. I probably do have viruses but beyond what I'm already doing, the only thing I know how to do is to re-install Windows 7 and start from scratch.

I will update those Process Explorer results while running under minimal usage soon.
