What should I upgrade in my computer, CPU or RAM?

I'm looking to upgrade my PC a bit so programs like Photoshop, ProTools and After Effect can run smoother and faster. So would upgrading my CPU or RAM be more beneficial for starting up, editing, and rendering in these programs? I am currently using an Intel i3 in my PC. Or would upgrading a different of he PC part be better? Don't want to spend over 300$ upgrading if I can.
-Thanks

if your motherboard supports newer cpus get a i5 or i7 while you still find compatible ones (socket 1155?). ram usage you can see in the resource manager (task manager, performance , resource manager) and if you see you're at the max you should upgrade it too.
