Building a gaming pc with my son for Xmas. He is currently using a M11x R1 laptop that does not have an optical drive. As a result, we have an external optical drive, and rarely use it.
This has me wondering if an optical drive is really needed. Anyone out there not use them in their builds, and if so, has it really handicapped you at all?
I am using a CM N200 case and the installation of an optical drive sort of takes away some of the aesthtics of the case, not that there was a great deal to begin with. Just starting to wonder if it is worth it since it appears I am only going to use it to install the OS. As it is, neither his computer or mine(Mac Mini) have one and it never seemed to be an issue.

No not at all....
Haven't used an optical drive in the past 3 years now.....
Maybe once.... that too didn't need to but did....
Don't waste money on it, you already have an external OD to compensate if you ever needed one.....

Like a fool three years ago I went and bought a BluRay Drive..... hmmm..... never used it to watch a movie till date.... never even used it as a standard compact disc drive........
Tragic..... now when i think of it.... it had cost me a bomb then.....but didn't have Toms to help me out then....:(
