Hello,
So lately my desktop has been having issues that I think may be a result of my GPU. I have a Radeon HD 6850 that is a few years old and I have been having three main problems.
1. Adobe Flash was constantly crashing, even when it was only from a flash ad on a page. I re-installed and it seems to occur less frequently but I also have been online a lot less lately. So it still happens at least on occasion.
2. When playing Everquest my screen will freeze but it behaves more like a pause. The game is still active and my computer still works, just nothing on my screen moves. As soon as I ctrl + alt + del it resumes and can just re-maximize and I'm good to go until this happens again. I am not sure if this is a result of my gpu or whatever version of directX I'm using, however this didn't happen when I was playing a few months ago.
3. The biggest issue is the fact that my computer will occasionally crash, but only when playing games as far as I can recall. The entire computer will freeze up and my screen will display colorful selection of horizontal bars, slightly ragged bars and thin. I can only remember this happening while playing games and so far it has happened in Everquest, Fallout New Vegas and Smite. It seems to happen sporadically, sometimes early into a game and sometimes after hours of play, also these games have varying degrees of graphics. This started happening a month or two ago.
That sums up the problems off the top of my head and the fact that they are all visually related leads me to think it may be my GPU. My card is kind of old and failing to keep up with new game requirements so I wouldn't be heartbroken to replace it with a Radeon HD 7870. But before I do I want to know if you guys think this will fix the problems or if I may have another cause. If so I would rather fix that first.
Thank You
PS. Could you guys also suggest a good budget mobo to pair with that 7870 and my i5 2500k? I do not need crossfire so I hope to save money that way, I am looking for <$100, the cheaper the better.
