I have a 100 GB C drive in my HDD and rest 3 are partitions for other use. Is it possible if I buy a SSD drive and make it the system drive (C:) and make hard disk as secondary drive? The purpose is to increase system's performance because my C drive is used the most by Windows 8 a nd other heavily used software like Photoshop, Visual Studio etc.

My preferred SSD 120 GB is http://www.flipkart.com/kingston-sv300s37a-120g-internal-hard-drive/p/itmdhdhgrrdccgn5?pid=IHDDHDK6XXD8RS8Q&ref=18d6edfb-aace-4740-aba0-f09fed7f9576 for ~ $100 is the cheapest in my region. I have 4 GB RAM and 0.3 ~ 0.5 GB remains unused most of the time. Usual RAM usage is 3.4/3.8 GB in in task manager.

Will SSD as my primary system drive will increase the performance, boot time, software start-up time etc.? I do not do large file transfers often.

My CPU is: Intel Core i3 540 @ 3.07GHz Clarkdale 32nm Technology
Motherboard: Intel Corporation Model DH55PJ

Hard disk details are attached below:

Manufacturer Western Digital
Form Factor GB/3.5-inch
Business Unit/Brand Desktop/WD Caviar
Heads 16
Cylinders 60,801
Tracks 15,504,255
Sectors 976,768,065
SATA type SATA-III 6.0Gb/s
Device type Fixed
ATA Standard ATA8-ACS
Serial Number WD-WCAYUK364498
LBA Size 48-bit LBA
Power On Count 837 times
Power On Time 345.5 days
Features S.M.A.R.T., AAM, NCQ
Transfer Mode SATA III
Interface SATA
Capacity 465 GB
Real size 500,107,862,016 bytes
RAID Type None

Solution
Your board does not have SATA III. So an SSD won't be that useful

Edit: nvm u can still buy the Plextor M5S and reap benefits even on a SATA II port

Thanks. I can upgrade motherboard too. Do you think I should upgrade RAM too? Will my current motherboard work with Core i5/i7 3rd gen. processor? Because I am planning to upgrade my PC to core i5 or i7 3rd gen. + 8 GB RAM (current 4 GB is in a single card slot and I have one more slot left for RAM) + 120GB SSD as primary disk + Motherboard if needed.

Actually the system is just able to meet my needs and might continue so for a year maximum, because I always keep my software updated which makes my hardware less powerful. So, I will upgrade within a few months.

Instead of boot system SSD, should I go for hybrid SSD/HDD? My primary usage is my C drive for OS and heavy software. I don't do gaming.

Please suggest.

U will have to upgrade mobo if u are going to buy a new cpu. DH55PJ has lga1156 socket. 3rd gen cpus use lga1155 socket. 4th gen use lga1150. If u are going for a 3rd gen cpu, Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H is good enough

If u are buying another stick of RAM make sure its identical, just buy RAM with same part no. and use it in dual channel mode.

SSHDs are not available. There is only one Seagate SSHD and that also for laptop with 5400rpm

Plextor M5S 128GB has the best performance/price ratio. People have just started using SSDs. So reliability and longevity is a question still to be answered.
